Rockefeller Center
Rockefeller Center
#About the Center

The city's business center in New York is one of the leading destinations for tourists. The center is named after John D. Rockefeller Junior, who leased the land from Columbia University in 1928. The center was developed between the years 1929-1940, and the estimated cost of the construction was around $250 million. In the construction over 4,000 workers took part. The official inauguration of the building was in 1933.

The complex is divided into two areas: one was built in the art-deco style in the 1920's, and the other includes modern buildings from the 1960's and 1970's. The complex spreads out on 88,000 square meters and has 19 office buildings. Rockefeller Center was purchased by the Mitsubishi Corporation in the 1980's.

Originally, John Rockefeller Junior planned to make the complex an opera and cultural center, however in 1929, with the stock market crash and the big slump that followed, the plan went down the drain. Instead of the original plan, began Rockefeller to develop the land and build office and residential buildings. After the family members were convinced that their name would attract high-level residents, they decided to call the center "Rockefeller Center."

Here you will find the center for music for Radio City Music Hall, the studios of NBC, the famous Atlas Statue, and more. There are also more than 100 stores and 40 restaurants and cafes.

#The Center's Viewpoint Terrace

In 2005 the Center's viewpoint platform was re-opened, located in "The Top of the Rock." The terrace has a wonderful view, and it even competes with the view that can be seen from the Empire State Building.

The terrace opened for the first time in 1933, and was decorated in the style of a huge shop - with comfortable chairs and an air vent. In 1986 it was closed following renovations in the building, and opened about 20 years later. In the renovated balcony you can enjoy the impressive view. Today there is a protective glass layer at the height of 2.5 meters that had been installed to protect from suicide attempts, as had happened more than once in the past.

To the viewpoint, you will arrive by elevator. These elevators, by the way, have glass floors, that will provide an experience to your elevator ride. The viewpoint is made up of three floors, where the 70th floor has an open rooftop that provides a 360-degree view, at the height of 260 meters. On a clear day, you can see up to 130 kilometers away.

Here, at NBC studios, the "Seinfeld" episode was filmed where Jerry and George try to sell the management on their idea for a TV series "about nothing."
New York Stock Exchange
New York Stock Exchange
#About the Most Famous Stock Exchange in the World

The New York Stock Exchange building was built in 1817. The Stock Exchange is the largest in the United States and the second largest in the world in the number of companies that trade here. Today, over 3,000 companies are traded here, equaling about $20,000 billion. Before 1817 the stock exchange was operating, only it was located in Wall Street itself.

The Stock Exchange was built on the corner of Wall Street and Broad Street in Manhattan. It is managed by the stock exchange board of directors, which handles the day-to-day operation of stock exchange systems, handling of listed companies and the approval of new candidates as stock exchange members.

About half of all trade occurs here, and the other half electronically over the computers. Each hour, huge amounts of money is traded here, with thousands of different stocks and values.

The New York Stock Exchange was established in 1792, northeast of where the building is located today. The original building reminds of a Greek temple, where Federal Hall sits. From here you can see the statue of George Washington that was placed here a few years earlier, after he was sworn in as President of the United States.

#Wall Street's History

It's amazing to think how such a small street, almost an alleyway in south Manhattan, turned into the most important place in the world of finance.

In downtown Manhattan, a long time ago Wall Street was built along a wooden fence (wall), created to protect the island, for fear of a British invasion. No remains of the fence are left today, but when it was still standing, in 1685, Wall Street was paved 32 years after the fence.

Later, stocks began being traded, and the local stock exchange was created. In the southern states, like Virginia and Georgia, there were already stock exchanges, and also in Canada to the north. Anyways, this incredible and almost unexplainable phenomena began happening, and it became the New York Stock Exchange, the same one that sits in the small street in Manhattan, the central nervous center of the world's businesses.

This happened because in Manhattan sat the Bank of New York. In 1792 the bank procured 24 stockbrokers, people who traded stocks, for a conference where it was agreed to begin selling stocks in an organized market. Naturally, the stock exchange that was chosen was in Manhattan, and the first stock to be traded, was for the Bank of New York, the founder and first member of the stock exchange.

After the end of the War of 1812, the building of the stock exchange began, and it began to expand. Three years later, a book of rules was legislated, Book of Laws and Regulations of the New York Stock Exchange, and in 1817 all the brokers of New York came together on 40 Wall Street.
Trump World Tower
Trump World Tower
#About the Tower Built by a President

The skyscraper located on First Avenue in Manhattan, is full of impressive presence and height. It is 262 meters tall, with 72 floors. The building cost no less than $300 million, and its construction took two years. During its first two years it was crowned as the tallest residential building in the world.

The architect of the tower was Costas Kondylis, a Greek architect, who planned the residential tower. All the exterior is transparent, with dark glass panels with a bronze/golden shade, giving an amazing view of the East River and Midtown. It was built out of a concrete skeleton, to protect the high floors from hard winds, and maintain the building stable.

Before its establishment, many people protested the building. There was a fear that it would overshadow the UN Headquarters nearby. There were those who feared it would be pointless, for its massive height and lack of character and external decorations.

The prices of apartments in the tower are really expensive. Prices vary between $625,000 for a studio and $28 million for the larger apartments. Though its large size, 1,858 square meters, the penthouse, taking up the uppermost two floors, did not manage to sell. the original price of sale was $58 million. After a few years with no avail, it was decided to divide the penthouse into 4 apartments, and these were sold away quickly.
