#About the Impressive Glass Building in the Heart of Parque del Buen Retiro

In the Parque del Buen Retiro in Madrid, at the corner of the small lake in the park, is an impressive glass building called Palacio de Cristal.

This is a special glass building, that was built in 1887, that was used as a greenhouse for exotic plants that were brought from the Philipines.

Actually, the Palacio de Cristal is more than just a designed greenhouse. This is a luxury greenhouse. The one who designed it is architect Ricardo Velázquez Bosco, the same person who designed the Kew Palace and Gardens in England.

Today, the Palacio de Cristal is one of the most beautiful buildings in the park, and is mainly used to display temporary art and exhibits by modern artists. As home to these exhibitions and a free extension of the Reina Sofia Modern Art Museum, this special palace is itself a kind of almost modern artistic creation.

Entrance is free.

Be sure not to confuse Palacio de Cristal with Casón del Buen Retiro, another museum in the park displaying paintings from the 19th century and on, including works by the Spanish Impressionist Joaquín Sorolla.

#About the Only Statue of the Devil in Europe

In El Retiro Park you will see the rose garden called "Rosaleda." The garden is rather beautiful, and you can enjoy some quiet time walking around. Besides the rose garden and the great flowers, you can meet a one of a kind display. This is the statue of the fallen angel, which only one quick look will clarify that it is the devil.

And so, in the rose garden in El Retiro Park is a statue of the devil, or to be exact, El Angel Caido. This is the only statue of its kind in Europe, and it is placed at the head of the impressive fountain in the south part of the park, and brings many statue enthusiasts from around the city.

This statue of the devil was created by the Spanish artist Ricardo Bellver. This is a unique statue that is dedicated to the devil, and as far as is known, is the only one of its kind in all of Europe.

#About the Statue of the Devil in Madrid

The falling angel, or devil, is a surprising statue in Spain, the traditional Catholic community, a land where usually you can find angels and saints. This is no ordinary site anywhere in Europe, a statue dedicated to the rule of spirits and the interesting story behind it.

The Spanish sculptor Ricardo Bellver identified in the 19th century with the "Paradise Lost," the famous epic by John Milton. Bellver decided to shake away the traditional definition of the devil as a living creature with horns, and sculpted it in a way described by Milton, and much closer to the actual description. The sculpture describes how the devil was thrown from the sky, in the form of a beautiful but corrupt angel. This is after he revolted against God as an angel and was punished for his pride.

In 1874 Bellver completed the statue that describes the dramatic fall. Many of Madrid's residents were shocked by the devil statue that was placed in their city, in the loved El Retiro Park. However the statue has won different awards, and today Madrid is proud to be the only city with the monument to the devil.

#About the Park Whose Gardeners are Considered Artists

Parque del Buen Retiro is a central and important park in the Spanish capital, and the most beautiful. Its beauty and maintenance are special, and this is what has won the hearts of the Madrid residents.

The park, whose name translates to "nice and relaxing," is also a sculptor garden, and a place for relaxing in the middle of the busy city. So, if you were looking for a place to rest a little from the trip - this is the perfect place to pass the time.

The garden was established in 1633, in the time of King Philip IV. It should not be surprising that this area was used as his hunting grounds.

Water fountains, wooded groves, organized flower beds, neo-Classical columns, and impressive statues, all this can be seen here. If you like sailing, at the heart of the park there is a beautiful garden just for that.

Near the lake you can see the Alfonso XII monument, the large monument has a column in the center, and on top a statue of the king on a horse. The monument is in memory of the King of Spain.

One of the most beautiful buildings in the park is the Palacio de Cristal, a glass building that was built in 1887 and was a greenhouse. Today, it is an exhibit space.

Notice the statue of the devil located in the southern end of the park. It is located near the rose garden, and right nearby there is the largest book market in Madrid.

The population that comes here is usually really varied. It includes families with children, couples, and students from the area. It is only natural that performers would come here, like jugglers and artists, that come to show off their skills.

Many family attractions are offered for visitors: starting from sporting facilities, fountains and picnic areas, street performers and artists.

Bring a bottle of premade sangria, that can be purchased in ever supermarket or kiosk, and take a few hours in the park.

In the park there is a free wing of the Reina Sofía Museum for modern art. Enjoy!
