In 1882 the museum moved to its current location. It offers visitors the opportunity to witness the greatest and finest collection of art and archaeology.
The museum, one of the world's largest art museums, has over 110,000 items including 87 national treasures. At any given time, the museum exhibits over 4,000 different items from its huge collection, alongside changing exhibits that are constantly being exhibited.
Among the collections of the oldest Japanese national museum in the country, stands the collection dedicated to ancient Japanese art. Also prominent in the museum is the Greco-Buddhist art collection, which is dedicated to Asian art from the Silk Road.
