About the Cave where Zeus was SavedIdeon Andron is a big cave, located 13 kilmoteres from the town of Anogeia, at the hight of 1,538 meters. This is only one of 3,000 caves on the Island of Crete, but this one has a mythological story which labled it an ancient site, from the period of the Minoans and up to the Romans.
Legend has it that this is where Zeus was hidden as a baby when he was born. Zeus, known was father of the gods, was hidden in the cave by his mother, who was afraid of Zeus's father, Cronus. Cronus wanted to kill his young son, after being told in a prophacy that one of his children will kill him. Horrific? Yes, but Greek mythology assures us that this is what happened. you might ask youself, how might baby Zeus get food and water and be kept alive? How will he grow? It is said that a goat gave him milk, not an average goas, but the goat nymph Amalthea. This is how Zeus was raised.
From this cave, there is a hike that heads towards the Psiloritis mountain, it is not a tough hike, but it takes a whole day for the there and back walk. Make sure to carry water, as there are no water sources on the way.
