Part of the lake is a nature reserve accessible to visitors. During the transitional seasons and especially in the fall, it is a preferred destination for migratory birds, making it a desired destination for birdwatchers and bird lovers from all of Europe.
The hordes of birds here come to the Burgas lakes, including this lake, because they are on the Via Pontica, one of the two largest bird migration routes in Europe. In fact, over 70% of the birds that pass through Bulgaria during the autumn migration are observed here.
Because its northern side connects to the Black Sea, Lake Atanasovsko is a salt lake. As in many salty lake in the world, the salinity of the water, which is between 20-27.5% here, makes the lake an excellent source in Bulgaria for the production of salt. Thus, the vegetation at Lake Atanasovsko is salty and exists in salt water.
