The building is in charge of a few historic sites across the city, most of them are archeological sites. The museum was established in 1943, and its first manager was the historian Agusti Duran i Sanpere.
In the museum you can see the ruins of Ancient Barcelona, from the Roman period and Middle Ages. It is located inside a castle that has stood here since the 10th century, in a room that until the 18th century was used as the chair of the Catalan Parliament.
Most of the exhibits shown here are made mostly from archeology findings, and remains with a long history, starting from the 1st to 7th centuries. Among the remains you will see an ancient fish factory, wine-making factory, church remains, and more.
The archeological digs in the museum spread across the size of 4,000 square meters.
